The world’s best female footballers are currently lighting up the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, with Chelsea’s stars already catching the eye. Before the likes of Fran Kirby and Ji So-Yun departed for the tournament, we spoke to the players about their love of the game.
Since the last tournament, the women’s game has gathered momentum, breaking attendance, participation and viewing records. It has increased in stature within the industry, with thousands of young girls looking up to these players, thanks to bigger exposure, more investment and the excitement of the game’s top leagues.
The Blues have been one of the leading women's teams of the last decade, with Kirby and Ji having starring roles alongside Millie Bright, Maren Mjelde and Erin Cuthbert, who are all featuring in this summer’s showpiece event.
In the second of our three-part series, The Road To France, the five players talk about the growth of the game, becoming full-time players and why they love playing football.
"There’s a lot more opportunity for girls to be involved in football, which can improve the growth in the women’s game."
