We speak to Chelsea FC Women's international stars ahead of the World Cup
The world’s best female footballers have come together for the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer, so we thought we’d catch up with some of Chelsea FC’s biggest names before they set off for France, talking about their passion for the game, hopes for the tournament and sharing some insights into life as an international football player.
The Blues had a strong season, with a third place finish in the FA Women’s Super League and were UEFA Champions League semi-finalists. Not too shabby! But now the focus turns to the international stage.
Fran Kirby and Millie Bright are representing England and will come up against Chelsea’s 2019 Player of the Year and Scotland star Erin Cuthbert, in their opening match of the tournament to kick off Group D. At the same time, CFC teammates Maren Mjelde and Ji So-Yun will also have to put friendships aside as they represent Norway and South Korea, who face off in Group A.
In the first of our three-part series, The Road To France, the five players discuss how the women’s game has developed since the last tournament four years ago, what it means for the fans coming to watch them, and facing their teammates on international duty.
“When you step over that white line, you’re not teammates. Everyone is so focused on doing the job in hand.”
